The Northern Lights Photography Tour is a chance for you to join Yooper Steve on a night of nightsky photography where you will learn how to take images of the phenomenon we call the Aurora Borealis more commonly referred to as the Northern Lights. The instruction will be most likely 2-5 hours depending on weather and the intensity and length of the Auroral display. Here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula we are in an excellent place to view them many times a year. The further north you go the better your chances of seeing them throughout the year when they become active. If you have always wanted to photograph them but haven't had the chance, this is your opportunity. This is a great opportunity for you especially if you are in the Midwest as it is closer than Alaska, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Churchill CA. In the U.P. we can usually expect to see the Auroras 10-20 times a year, sometimes more. During the spring equinox and fall equinox the geomagnetic storms are more active making for a higher chance to see them combined with more darkness which is a requirement to see them. We will photograph them from multiple locations through the tour so we can get as many different images as possible, variety is the spice of life. Seeing and photographing the Auroras are never 100%, just because the data shows they should be active or if other locations across the world are seeing them, there is never 100% chance of seeing them, just so you are aware. I have seen and photographed hundreds of Auroras from the Upper Peninsula and have been skunked plenty of times by the clouds, snow, thunderstorms, and just because the geomagnetic activity changed. That's why they call it Aurora hunting.

Hi, I am Yooper Steve, I know how to get around the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan better than anyone. I grew up in Marquette and moved to the Copper Country during high school. Since childhood I have explored the forests and waters of the Upper Peninsula. I enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, teaching survival skills, cross county skiing, snowshoeing, and off road adventuring. My Top 3 areas to explore and relax are the Keweenaw peninsula, Porcupine Mtns, and the Huron Mountains. I like many other places in the U.P. but these areas have many adventures with less crowds for extreme solitude.
